Minnesota LED lighting manufacturer learns from fairgoers

PLYMOUTH, MN U.S.A. – Minnesota is home to Once Innovations (ONCE), a rapidly growing manufacturer of LED lamps and fixtures with ideas, technology, and products to change the way the world thinks about energy-efficient lighting. So where do good ideas come from? From consumers and business owners, including those who visited the Minnesota State Fair, where ONCE manned a booth, not to sell products, but to listen and learn.

“We actually modified some of our designs and created new products based on the things we learned,” said Brian Babb, head of Business Development for ONCE. “We heard loud and clear that people don’t like CFLs very much … they don’t like the illumination qualities or the fact they contained Mercury. We also learned consumers are disappointed with the quality and cost of LED lighting currently on the market.”

Does a small, relatively new company in the Midwest really think it can compete on a global level with the giant iconic brands in the lighting universe? In a word, yes, says Babb.

“The giants have made their mark with traditional lighting concepts and products. To date, no company has cracked the code on manufacturing quality LED lighting that’s efficient and affordable, so there is a window of opportunity for companies like ours who have the right combination of vision, technology, and design.”

Once also heard a great deal of praise from fairgoers for its earth-friendly approach to doing business, manufacturing its products, and it’s raising of money to benefit eco-education.
